The 49th annual Enmanji Buddhist Temple 49th Annual Teriyaki Barbecue and Bazaar attracts thousands of people to Sebastopol. There is no entrance fee and the festival will include teriyaki chicken lunch, and other ethnic foods, bonsai display from the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society, an extensive outdoor plant sale, Buddhist dharma talk, games for the kids, handicrafts, raffle drawing, bingo, cultural arts displays, martial arts demonstrations and taiko drumming by Sonoma County Taiko. There will also be a display of Internment Camp artifacts from local Sonoma county residents and discussions lead by Henry Kaku, Ikebana flower arranging demonstration and sale by Lance Lew , both from Petaluma.
The following week Enmanji Temple will host Obon Odori dancing event on July 19th at 7 PM. This community outdoor dance, Obon, honors those who have passed, and who come back to earth once a year to enjoy the earthly pleasures. The dances which are performed in two or more concentric circles with the dance instructors in the center to assist the performers with the simple steps. The uchiwa fan and paper lanterns are the symbols of the celebration; as they both represent the full moon and the light to guide those who have passed, back to the heavens.
Preceding the dance on Saturday will be dance practices for anyone interested in joining the dance on the 19th. The practices will be from Tuesday, July 15 through Friday, July 18 at 7 PM each evening and will take place at the Memorial Hall.????????
Proceeds from this fundraiser help support the local Enmanji Buddhist temple.
